Award up for grabs for the best floral display

An award for the floral display which best enhances the village has been resurrected by the Parish Council.

During the refurbishment of the Festival Hall, a silver trophy was uncovered. The Shell Trophy was first presented in 1990 to the residents whose garden had made the greatest contribution to the 'look' of the village. It was last presented in 2001.

The rediscovery of the Shell Trophy coincided with the untimely death of Ian Miller, a lifetime resident of Alderley Edge, a gardener, allotment holder and a friend and advisor to many colleagues. The Trophy is now being awarded in his memory.

Last year the award was presented to the Alderley in Bloom Group in recognition of the hard work they put in to enhance the village – for which they were awarded a Silver Gilt Award by North West in Bloom in 2016 and 2017.

The competition this year is open to every house, business, retailer, restaurant, cafe, bar, hotel, bank, petrol station, school, nursing home, or residential apartment block, which creates an outstanding floral display that can be enjoyed from the public road. The competition is designed to give our village 'a summer boost' and to complement the work undertaken by other groups.

It will will be judged by a panel from the Alderley Edge 'Village in Bloom' Group, the Alderley Edge Allotments and Gardens Society and the Alderley Edge Parish Council. Gardens or displays can be any style, design or make up, such as gardens, containers, planters, hanging baskets, window displays or combinations of them all.

The judging panel will be looking for exceptional creativity, imagination, colour and impression. Size will not be a factor. Judging will commence on the weekend 28th and 29th July 2018.

Photographs of the shortlisted displays will be exhibited at The Alderley Edge Village Show, held at the Festival Hall on Saturday 1st September 2018, where the winner will be announced.

Additionally, there will be a number of Award Certificates for:

  • Best Residential Garden Display
  • Best Retail Premises Display
  • Best Cafe, Restaurant or Bar Display
  • Best Non Retail Business Display

No entry forms are required. Anyone is free to nominate displays they deem to be 'very special' by emailing the Clerk at the Parish Council and these will be noted by the judging panel.
