Orchestra receives Community Grant

The Alderley Edge Orchestra has received a grant of £250 from Cheshire East Council. The Award is to help the orchestra to develop its concert activities during the coming year. One of the key roles of the orchestra is to provide performing opportunities for talented local orchestral players and professional soloists.

"This is excellent news for the orchestra," said secretary Roger Dowling. "We are particularly pleased that Cheshire East is lending its support to live music performances in the area."

The orchestra has been giving regular orchestral concerts in Alderley Edge since 1922 when it was set up by Philip Godlee. Over the years many top soloists have appeared with the orchestra. In 2002, 15-year-old Jennifer Pike from Chetham’s School of Music played Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Two weeks later she played the same concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London and became BBC Young Musician of the Year. Today she is a top international soloist, pictured left.

The next concert, on 6th March at Alderley Edge Methodist Church, will feature pianist Simon Conning (pictured above), who studied at King’s School, Macclesfield before establishing a musical career in London’s West End. He will be joining the orchestra in performances of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy and Litolff’s Scherzo.

Tickets are available online, from the hotline 0161 439 6277 or at the door.
