Teenager detained by members of the public after stealing a handbag

A 15-year-old boy was detained by members of the public on London Road on Wednesday, 4th April, after stealing a handbag from a shop in the village centre.

Police received a call shortly after 12.20pm from a shop owner stating that a male had run from her store with a handbag he had taken from the display.

The teenager was detained nearby by members of the public and the situation was found by a passing plain clothes police officer who was on patrol in the village.

The offender was not arrested but voluntarily attended a police station to help police with their enquiries.

The stolen item has been returned and the offender has been banned from the store.

A police spokesperson said "Following discussions with the victim, they told police they did not want to make a complaint regarding this incident but wanted police to advise the boy on his behaviour.

"Officers gave the boy strong words of advice and his mum took him home to Stockport."
