Speeding vehicles clocked on Wilmslow Road

IMG_0712

Local Speedwatch volunteers were joined by Councillor Craig Browne on Wilmslow Road on Thursday, 15th March.

They were located near the Harden Park junction between 10 and 11am, during which time they recorded a total of 29 vehicles travelling in excess of 35mph - the speed limit on this section is 30mph.

Twenty-two of the speeding vehicles were travelling between 36 and 39mph and a further seven vehicles were travelling in excess of 40mph.

The highest recorded speed was 44mph, whilst the average speed of all recorded vehicles was 38mph.

Councillor Craig Browne said "We have been joined by a further three new volunteers and as a result, from April we are planning to increase our presence to two speedwatch sessions per month, which we hope will boost our visibility and driver awareness.

"Next month, we will be carrying out sessions on Congleton Road and Wilmslow Road (opposite Piccolino's). If anyone can spare an hour and would like to join us, please let me know in the comments box below."

why don’t they patrol the village over a weekend when the out of town Supercar speeders race through encouraged on by the car spotting geeks who stand in the middle of the road ? Surely this is more productive than 3 miles out of town on a A road ......

What does this achieve if the drivers are not fined?

A number of local villages have installed permanent solar powered speed indicator signs at the entrances to their villages. They prove to be extremely effective in keeping speeds down to the limit.

I would suggest that Craig investigates what I am sure will be a worthwhile option.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for your comment.

The option of a solar powered Speed Indicator Device (SID) was considered by the Parish Council early in 2017; however, the cost exceeded £5,000. We therefore decided to buy a battery operated SID as an alternative, which was installed on Congleton Road at a cost of £2,400. Our budget for 2018/19 includes provision for the purchase of an additional battery operated SID, which we hope to place on order within the next few weeks.

Kind regards,
Craig

Hi Fraser,

Thank you for your suggestion. The Speedwatch volunteers make a valued contribution to raising awareness of local speed limits and helping to make our village safer as a result. I’m sure everyone would want to join me in thanking them for their efforts and for giving up their time.

As a group, we have discussed running some extra sessions in the village centre, but unfortunately we are not able to do so with the existing volunteer base. If you are willing and able to help out, please drop me an email (craig ) and I will add your name to the list.

Kind regards,
Craig

Yet again, speedwatch volunteers clocking traffic during quiet times. Does it really need 7 of them? Do something about the dangerous parking of multiple builders vans downhill on Macclesfield road. This would be far more useful.

Maybe your volunteers in the high vis jackets could direct the traffic around the builders vans to keep the flow of traffic safe?

Or maybe they could politely ask them to park elsewhere?

Many of the “out of town week-end speeders” do not have front numberplates on their “supercars”, so even if the volunteers did try to clock them there would be no evidence.
I am not sure what the local traffic police do at weekends.

Well said Peter, perhaps our Police and Crime Commissioner would care to comment about your last sentence?

Craig

Thank's for your reply regarding the SID

I would suggest that you looks at those in use arround Goostrey - they are extremely bright and as such as noticable by motorists.

The battery operated type that you have urchased simply isn't bright enough

Like other comments I agree that unless these speeders are fined it is pointless standing there providing amusement for the drivers who whizz past you .

I wonder why such devices cost so much money. You can get a 2nd hand car for the price!
