Girl Guides make an impact

All seven schools in the Alderley Edge District allowed Rainbows, Brownies and Guides to wear their Guiding uniform to school today (Friday, 16th February) to help celebrate World Thinking Day.

Girlguiding Alderley District is delighted that Alderley Edge Community Primary School, Alderley Edge School for Girls, Chelford C E Primary School, Mottram St Andrew Primary Academy, Nether Alderley Primary School, Prestbury C E Primary School and The Ryleys School all supported the celebration which has taken place every year since 1926.

World Thinking Day falls on 22nd February each year, which is during half-term, when over ten million Guides and Girl Scouts in 145 countries worldwide think of each other and celebrate their commitment to international friendship and understanding. The theme for 2018 is IMPACT – showing the power we have to make a positive change in our local or wider communities.

Amanda Spedding, on behalf of Girlguiding Alderley Edge District, said "Our units have made an impact in a wide variety of ways. 1st Alderley Brownies and Guides have been campaigning to save Alderley Edge Library. This is a cause close to their hearts after Craig Browne and Rachael Grantham visited in November 2017 as part of Parliament week and held a debate on the future of the library. We are particularly impressed with young Brownie Alice and her sister Iris who really made an impact by collecting over 600 signatures on their petition to save the library."

She added "5th Alderley Brownies have pledged to use less plastic in their meetings as they are concerned about their environment. Mottram Brownies have raised £45.50 for Unicef to buy blankets for children in Syria, Prestbury Guides have picked up brooms and shovels to clear the area around their Guide Hall and Chelford Brownies and Guides have planted bulbs at Chelford village hall in the shape of the World Guiding Badge. A busy time! Alderley Guides even had a surprise visit from Lady Baden Powell!"

Alderley Edge District has 12 Units in total. If you would like to register to join one of our units or would like to volunteer to help at one of the units please go to www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested.
