The A555 westbound, from the A34 to Wilmslow Road, will be closed from 12th February for 17 weeks.
A spokesperson said "Essential maintenance works need to be carried out on the A555 to repair problems with the highway drainage that is causing a depression to form within the carriageway. If the problem is not rectified, it could lead to the collapse of the carriageway. The repair works required are extensive and include: excavation to approximately 5 metres below the existing road level, installation of temporary steel sheet piles to support the excavation, replacement of the damaged drainage, backfilling of the excavation and resurfacing."
During the works, the A555 westbound from the A34 to Wilmslow Road needs to be closed 24 hours a day for a period of 17 weeks from 12th February. The closure is needed for safety of the workforce and road users. The signed diversion route will be via the A34 northbound, B5094 Stanley Road westbound and B5353 Wilmslow Road southbound.
The spokesperson added "We are working to keep disruption to a minimum, including timing the works to take place over the school half term and Easter holidays. The traffic management will be under continuous review and, if feasible, sections of carriageway will be opened up as soon as it is safe to do so.
"The repair works will be carried out by the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road (A6MARR) contractor, Carillion Morgan Sindall, who will also carry out works as part of the A6MARR scheme within the closure as part of efforts to minimise overall disruption in the area."
