Gift boxes to make children in need smile this Christmas

When it comes to Christmas support for children experiencing poverty the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean have it all boxed off with their Rota-Toy scheme.

Now in its fourth year, the scheme collects donated new and pre-loved toys and creative materials from local schools, nurseries, businesses and individuals and then, once they are checked over, the club members deliver the boxes to charities, children's homes and hostels.

One particular donation of note this year contained 20 beautifully knitted, brightly coloured woollen bonnets and bobble hats for children and it was decided to donate these to The Christie Hospital, who were delighted.

Rotary Club spokesperson, Geoff Shelmerdine said, "We are indebted to those who generously support our Rota-Toy 'recycling' scheme. Since we started Rota-Toy we have seen a marked increase in requests for help each year and this year we have distributed over 700 filled boxes to organisations in Wilmslow, Wythenshawe, Stockport and across Cheshire East.

"Additionally, our boxes of toys are now being requested from local Food Banks to meet the increasing demand."

Geoff continued "Our message on each brightly coloured Rota-Toy box states 'A box full of smiles from a child to a child' and this is exactly what we want to achieve with our scheme – to put a smile on the faces of those children in our local community who have nothing to look forward to at this special time of the year."
