Airport link road reopens after bomb squad deals with suspicious package

The Manchester Airport Link Road has re-opened following an earlier incident but motorists are advised that there remains heavy congestion in the area.

Police officers were notified that a suspicious package had been discovered by workmen near to the A555 Manchester Airport Link Road in Wilmslow at approximately 2pm today (Monday, 4th December).

Police attended the scene along with Explosives Ordinance Disposals (EOD) and a cordon was put in place as a precautionary measure. As a result of the cordon the A555 was closed in both directions from its junction with the A34 to its junction with Wilmslow Road.

A police spokesperson said "Having examined the package, EOD have now established that it contained chalk and there is no risk to the public. EOD has now disposed of the packages.

"All road closures have now been lifted and officers would like to thank local residents and motorists for their patience. Drivers are advised that there remains increased congestion in the area."
