Crowd gets into the festive spirit at Christmas lights switch on

The countdown to Christmas officially began this evening when residents and visitors came together in the village centre for the Alderley Edge Christmas lights switched on.

Crowds gathered on London Road for this ever popular event organised by the Alderley Edge Traders Action Group to mark the start of the run up to Christmas.

The honour of switching on the lights went to the two winners of the school's poster competition: Mya Taube, from Year 5 at Alderley Edge School for Girls and Max Bailey, from Year 6 at Alderley Edge Community Primary School.

They were assisted on stage by model and singer Nermina Pieters-Mekic, who joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Cheshire this year, and her husband footballer Erik Pieters, who plays for Stoke City and the Dutch national team.

During the evening local performers took to the stage, which was hosted by local resident and author John Wallace, including the Alderley Edge School for Girls' Choir, Alderley Edge Community Primary School Choir, Ryleys' School Choir, Luis Sullivan, Drew Selby, SMB Dance, The Bennetts and Siren & Sound Choir.

Father Christmas also made an appearance, much to the delight of the little ones who were also able to enjoy a giant snow globe and fairground rides.

Thank you Mitch for organising this great community event. I am sure everyone in Alderley Edge appreciates all the hard work you put into it. It was a great success again.
Thank you also to Steve Taggart and team for organising the road closure. I know Steve spent all evening directing traffic. I do hope you got a nice cup of hot coffee or maybe something alcoholic to keep you going.
