Council to let land off Wilmslow Road

Cheshire East Council has decided to let a parcel of land off Wilmslow Road for grazing.

The Council had previously agreed to lease the 8.6 acre site, opposite Ryleys playing fields, to Alderley Edge School for Girls so it could be transformed into a sports facility for football, hockey, tennis, netball and other sports. In addition to providing extra sports facilities for Alderley Edge School for Girls, the intention was for them to be available for local schools and sports clubs to use.

However, after spending over a year in negotiations with Cheshire East Council to lease the land, the Governors of AESG informed the Council in November 2016 that they were withdrawing from the negotiations, partly due to the conditions of the contract but also the time it would take to get the project underway. Instead the school has been focussing on improving the sports facilities on their own land.

Councillor Craig Browne said "I have quizzed CEC further to ascertain their intentions for the site and they have confirmed that this decision has been taken following the decision by Alderley Edge School for Girls not to proceed with their plans for the site."

Lee Beckett (CEC Assets) has confirmed to Councillor Browne that "to ensure the land is managed, maintained and that the Council receive a little income, then we are proposing to let the land on a temporary basis for grazing."

Craig Browne added "The land in question lies opposite the Ryleys School Playing Field and is not the land in which David Wilson Homes have expressed an interest, which is in private ownership."
