Elderly gentleman targeted by distraction thieves in village centre

An elderly gentleman was the victim of a distraction theft in the village centre this morning, Friday, 29th September.

Shortly before 11am an 84-year-old resident of Alderley Edge was in the post office withdrawing some cash when the manager who was serving him was interrupted by a man and woman requesting information about Western Union.

The manager then went to collect some leaflets which she gave to the couple before continuing to serve the gentleman.

Having left the Post Office he proceeded up West Street before being approached by the man, who he recognised from having been in the Post Office, who was saying 'you dropped, you dropped' and holding a £10 note.

The Alderley Edge resident, who had just withdrawn £70 in £10 notes from the Post Office, presumed he had dropped it and got his wallet from his back pocket to place the £10 in.

The man tried to assist and take the wallet, saying 'I help, I help'.

The victim thanked him and moved on but within minutes his bank were on the phone to say somebody had been using his card.

Presumably whilst the victim was keying in his pin code in the post office he was overlooked and the offender had succeeded in withdrawing £250 from his account, having previously tried to obtain £2000.

The victim described the woman as being in her late 30s to early 40s. She was very attractive and statuesque at nearly 6ft tall with short blonde hair and wearing orange trainers which looked new. Whilst the man was described as small with dark hair and stubble. Both had foreign accents.
