Countdown to the 76th annual show

Final preparations are underway for this year's Alderley Edge Village Show, which has been a part of the village calendar for the past 76 years.

Organised by the Alderley Edge Allotments and Gardens Society, this year's event will take place at the Festival Hall on Saturday, 9th September.

The competitive show, which aims to promote and encourage interest in horticulture and crafts for all ages, is open to everyone - offering the chance for local people to enter their flowers, vegetables, fruit, cakes, photographs or works of art.

Fenton Simpson, Village Show Manager, said "We are hoping to have a great show this year and to build on last year's success at the Festival hall. The venue proved to be a great venue for our show and I'm sure the improvements made to the hall since last year will add on to the success of the show.

"We have also moved the date of the show a bit later this year so that it falls in September. We have done to encourage more children's entries and we also don't want to distract from the other shows like Mottram which are smaller but great village shows none the less. We will of course review the date of the show each year and the classes.

"I hope to see more entries than last year and would encourage all to enter at least one class if it is to only support the use Festival hall as an asset to the village. We of course have lots of cups and trophies to win ! including the new Ann Gomertz memorial cup for best painting in show. Ann was one of our judges and an allotment holder of 36 years but sadly passed away last year."

Refreshments, including a selection of homemade cakes, will be served during the show and there will be the opportunity to win prizes donated by local businesses in the raffle.

The Alderley Edge Village Show will take place at the Festival Hall on Saturday 9th September. Doors open at 12 noon and the awards and trophies will be handed out at 3.30pm.

Fenton added "If you don't enter the show then please come and visit the show from 12noon on the Saturday and we have of course a café filled with delicious homemade cakes, other refreshments and of course our very popular raffle!"

Admission to the show is £1 for adults and 50p for children.

I believe copies of the show programme and entry form are available in Alderley Edge Library and other shops and businesses in the village.

I would like to congratulate everyone involved in delivering an excellent Village Show, once again. It was also lovely to see the event so well attended and supported by local people.

Can I also take this opportunity to say thank you to Alderley Edge Allotments & Gardens Society for donating excess produce from the show, to The Welcome Charity (Knutsford) for use in their community cafe.

It is wonderful to see different community groups working together to support each other
