Police are warning residents in Cheshire to be on their guard against 'sneaky' thieves.
With the warmer weather there tends to be an increase in the number of 'sneak-in' burglaries reported to police as people leave open doors and windows to keep cool.
Cheshire Police are urging people to remain security conscious and follow a few simple steps to deter thieves:
- Make sure all windows are closed and locked or, at the very least, use the security measures on some windows which allow you to lock the window when it's partially open.
- All external doors should be secured at all times, even when you are at home.
- Keep all valuables out of sight and ensure that large amounts of cash are never kept in the home.
- Always use a chain when answering the door to restrict access to your home.
- It's also a good idea to keep an eye on your neighbourhood and report any suspicious activity to police.
Superintendent Martin Cleworth said: "We can't stress enough how important it is for people to be security conscious – especially during the summer months.
"During the warm weather there is always the temptation to leave windows and doors unlocked and open - but people need to be aware that this is also an open invitation to an opportunist burglar.
"It only takes a matter of seconds for a thief to get into your house and grab something that is valuable to you. The same goes for leaving your car unattended with the windows open, don't leave valuables on display and don't wind your windows down fully.
"We are committed to tackling this type of crime but we need the continued support of members of the public.
"We would urge you to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity in your area immediately and to address your own home security measures to make life even more difficult for thieves."
