Take on the Summer Reading Challenge - help Animal Agents crack the case

The Summer Reading Challenge is returning to Alderley Edge Library this week encouraging children to keep up their reading during the holidays.

Organised by the Reading Agency, children are challenged to read six library books of their choice and children taking part will receive a little incentive at each stage to encourage them. Every time they finish two books the children receive a reward and there will be prizes along the way.

The theme this year is 'Animal Agents' which will introduce young readers to a variety of clever creatures, specially trained to use their skills and natural instincts to unravel mysteries. Animal Agents is illustrated by Tony Ross, illustrator of the hugely popular Horrid Henry series.

Anne Sarrag, Summer Reading Challenge director for The Reading Agency, says: "Animal Agents is all free fun, which is top news for parents. So mums, dads and carers, pop down to your local library and find out more about what's happening locally, and help your children discover a love of stories this summer whilst they maintain and develop their reading skills over the summer holidays. "

The Summer Reading Challenge is free to take part in, open to all primary school children and is designed for all reading abilities. You can sign up at Alderley Edge Library from Saturday 1st July to receive your free pack and the challenge runs until Saturday 9th September.

Librarian Janet Haley said "There are additional incentives available for children joining the challenge at Alderley Edge Library this year, funded by the Alderley Edge Institute Trust, we have folding games, door hangers and book marks and two spot prizes one for a lucky starter in the first three weeks of the challenge and one prize for a lucky winner at the awards ceremony which will be held at the library on Thursday 14th September at 6pm. In addition we have free drop in craft sessions, "Games in the Library" every Thursday afternoon in August, a free "Infrared Detector" drop in session, run in association with SHIFT (www.shift-digital.co.uk) on Friday 4th August and a "Where's Wally Fun" event on Friday 18th August."
All completers will be invited to an award ceremony in September to collect a medal and certificate.

Janet added "Last year 97 children started the challenge at Alderley Edge Library and 50 children completed, we are hoping lots more children will take part this year and enjoy the activities and free services their local library has to offer."
