On Monday, 8th May, we reported on the passing of a 96-year-old World War II veteran who had no family to mourn him.

Friends of Harry Wheeler appealed for members of the community to join them to pay their respects to Harry, who was in the Royal Marines during WW2, at his funeral on Thursday 18th May.

The news of Harry's passing attracted a huge amount of interest and was shared with the Royal British Legion and fellow Royal Marines.

As a result, Albert Slacks Funeral Directors have confirmed that the arrangements for the funeral are now being carried out by The Royal Marine Regiment and will include music, pipers and other aspects associated with 'a proper send-off' of a Royal Marine veteran.

Harry's friend said "In other words, he will be given the traditional Royal Marines vets send off that they feel appropriate."

She added "They have asked that no more appeals for help are made as it will only confuse matters."

Harry lived and worked in and around Wilmslow all his life. He was married to Enid for over 50 years and had one child Susan, both of which are deceased. He was a master carpenter, a keen gardener and loved crown green bowling.

Harry lived independently in his own home until the age of of 94 and then in a care home in Macclesfield until his passing on Monday, 8th May.

The funeral of Harry Wheeler will take place at 10.40am on Thursday 18th May at Macclesfield Crematorium.
