This week is Dementia Awareness Week. The word 'dementia' describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they have become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.
Brookview Care Home on Brook Lane provides residential dementia care in a tranquil setting and offers people living with a dementia a warm, welcoming and safe environment in which to live.
Brookview offers it residents a daily range of activities and events – both inside the home and organised trips out. When a new resident arrives at Brookview, Maureen Southern, the home's manager speaks to the resident and their family to establish what they like to do. This may mean doing something they've always done, for example painting, but it could also lead to learning something new.
There is plenty for everyone to enjoy at Brookview including musical recitals, painting classes with a visiting artist, an arts and crafts group, exercise classes, games and quizzes. The home holds an annual Summer Garden Party and takes part in seasonally themed and local charity and community events. Local entertainers often visit and residents can enjoy regular excursions to the beautiful Cheshire countryside, historic museums and country houses. Children from nearby schools regularly visit and support the home and it has strong links with all the local churches.
