New members welcome as Heyes Lane Tennis Club unveils new courts

Promotional Feature

Significant investment in new courts at Heyes Lane Tennis Club, in Alderley Edge, makes it the perfect place to play and watch tennis in wonderfully scenic surroundings.

The courts renewal program involved repair and upgrade of foundations followed by the laying of a new astro-turf surface. Work was completed 2 weeks ago by well-known sports facility contractor, Platt Construction of Chester who are a principal contractor of the Sports and Play Contractors Association and carry out works to L.T.A consultant specifications.

Heyes Lane Tennis Club is situated on The Circuit, off Heyes Lane in Alderley Edge. The club was formed in 1925 with 2 grass courts on the north side of the small 'Whitehall Brook'. At that time, there were no houses on 'The Circuit' and access was via a path along the side of the brook from the bridge on Heyes Lane. By 1960 the grass courts had been replaced by shale, similar to the 'clay' courts of today. In 1972 volunteers at the Club made a third shale court at right angles to the other two courts. This was a big step because it allowed the Club to enter the North East Cheshire Men's and Ladies Leagues (requiring three courts to play matches).

From that time, there have been many successful years in the various Divisions of the League, and the winning shields are still on display in the Clubhouse. The Club won the Men's second division in 1977 and in the 90′s was in the first Division, almost winning one year – a remarkable achievement for a small Club. The shale courts were replaced in 1990 by three tarmac all weather courts. In 1994, the Club started its Junior coaching programme run by a qualified LTA coach. This developed quickly to a very successful Juniors Section involving more than 100 players with teams in each age group of the North East Cheshire Junior League and in 2000 one of the club's Juniors reached the National Finals of the Nestle sponsored tournament for Club Junior players.

The club has a current membership of 106, fields 2 competitive men's teams in the North-East Cheshire League, runs regular social tennis activity through the season and junior coaching sessions from age 6. The club also supports the local community where it can, including an afternoon's coaching with Alderley Edge Primary School free of charge. All coaching is supported the club's qualified LTA coach, Paul Mannion. Paul has been involved with the Club for 17 years now and his relaxed and friendly style is respected by both adults and juniors alike.

A typical seasonal programme:

  • Coaching for juniors on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
  • Adult coaching on Wednesday mornings at 9:30am and Sunday afternoons at 1pm. Sunday coaching is followed by a social tennis session.
  • Tennis camps for Juniors through the main school holidays.
  • Option for personal coaching with Head Coach, Paul.
  • Social tennis runs on Sunday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm and Tuesday evenings from 6pm.
  • A mixed team in the winter period.
  • A number of friendlies, both mixed and ladies.
  • A doubles summer competition and "open competition" in September, with BBQ.

The club will be present at Alderley Edge May Fair on Saturday 20th May offering the opportunity to find out more about the club and take part in a fun competition. This will be followed on Sunday 21st May with a chance to come and look at the club during an open day, have a hit with the club coach and take advantage of promotional introductory membership rates.
