Tennis club players net thousands for new courts

Hundreds of residents dressed up to the nines for the Alderley Edge Tennis Section's Spring Ball fundraiser at Alderley Edge Cricket Club.

Around 450 guests including members of the tennis section joined together on the grand night out, raising more than £25,000 towards transforming the grass tennis courts into all-weather versions.

Party goers enjoyed a host of entertainments including singing serving staff The Three Waiters, whose act involves them bursting spontaneously into opera songs à la The Three Tenors.

Club tennis section member Tim Jevons said: "Everyone loved them – there is just something about opera that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

"It was a fantastic night – everything we wanted it to be and more.

"The money for the all-weather courts is really important as it will mean we can engage more with the community and the tennis juniors and have more teams playing in the local leagues."

Guests also watched performances by magician and Britain's Got Talent finalist David Penn and singer Toby Hinton, with soul band Dougie James and the Soul Train getting everyone up on the dancefloor.

There was even a 16 strong flash mob dance routine to Marc Ronson's Uptown Funk by the tennis section's lady members, whilst champagne, canapes and dinner topped off the celebrations.

A further £5,000 towards the courts revamp was also raised by a Ladies Lunch at the club.

Fantastic event for a great cause! These events do not happen without the true dedication of people like Tim and the other committee members! The village is lucky to have such an active and innovative sports club, and long may it continue.
