Police & Crime Commissioner recruiting £80,000 Chief of Staff

The Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, David Keane, is currently seeking to appoint a Chief of Staff to his team to assist in the delivery of his Police and Crime Plan over the next four years.

This appointment will be on a permanent contract and the successful candidate will receive a salary of £75,591 to £80,688 along with 31 days annual leave, plus bank holidays and the option of a pension.

Working for the Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner based in Stockton Heath, the successful candidate will be the lead member of the PCC senior management team, undertaking the role of the Chief Executive Officer and monitoring officer.

This followers the recent controversial appointment of a Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire on a salary of £50,000.

Speaking last month David Keane said: "I am delighted to announce that Sareda Dirir will take up the role of Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner from March 2017. Sareda is the first Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner in the county to be appointed following an open and competitive recruitment process."

However, there has been much criticism of her appointment. The issue of independence was raised during an interview with Cheshire Police and Crime Panel as her parents and the Commissioner are fellow Labour councillors for the Penketh and Cuerdley ward on Warrington Borough Council and she has known him for about 20 years, which the Commissioner apparently did not tell the panel.

Additionally, the Cheshire Police and Crime Panel, were not provided with her CV for the interview during which her behaviour was described as 'aggressive' and 'defensive'.

John Dwyer, the former Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, appointed Margaret Ollerenshaw, the former Chairman of the Police Authority, as his deputy towards the end of 2012. Her remuneration was £22,500, 30% of the salary of the Commissioner, based on an average three days per week.

What? What's going on, I know get rid of more police officers and have the PCC team solving crime and policing the streets, I really feel for the Chief Constable and the police officers of Cheshire it must be really comforting to know that you are being managed by very well paid administrators, the public will safer in there beds, NOT. I notice our PCC has the same paperwork on his desk, probably salary reviews.

@Duncan, perhaps you might have been better putting in an FOI Request to the PCC via his website?
This is what I have done and I await a response with baited breath. If I get a response (I asked for a list of the job-titles and their respective salaries) then I will share it.

Hi Pete,
been down the FOI route myself, in the past.
The 'Compliance Lady' was very helpful; it was about the cost of something in the park.
Next time I tried I got 'we no longer price parks individually'. Obfuscation ?

I'd keep you company in holding breathe, but I don't want to choke !

One might ask why a citizen has to use an FOI to uncover how much WE are paying out ?

What a waste of space this PCC is !! He arbitrarily decides that his office should be nearer home. He employs a deputy whose family have been friends for 20 years and now he needs a replacement to do his job for him !! How can this man hold the Chief Constable to account if he is not at HQ Winsford to do so ? For Gods sake bring back John Dwyer who as far as I can see did an amazing job at far less cost, and understood how the police family work. Mr Keane; do us all a favour and resign. That would save us in the region of £250,000 which could be used to far greater effect for policing Cheshire.

Pete,
any news re. your FOI on the number and amounts of salaries paid to the PCC and his team?

If not, perhaps the fugures are so large that they take a long time to add up?

Yes I know its only been a week but how hard is it to look up the remunerations of a few C.E. employees?

Will Data Protection rear its ugly little head ?
