As reported on alderleyedge.com last month, Alderley Edge Parish Council agreed to purchase an addition speed indicator device (SID) to try and reduce the number of vehicles speeding through the village.

The new SID, which cost £1850, has been installed on Congleton Road for one week now, during which time it has recorded the speed of 12,587 passing vehicles.

Of these 46.2% were travelling above the 30 mph speed limit. The average speed was 29.5 mph and the fastest recorded speed was 64 mph.

Councillor Craig Browne said "I'm pleased that the SID is in place and operational a little bit ahead of schedule. Although it is disappointing to discover that there were three drivers travelling at 64mph, it is also reassuring to find that the average speed (29.5mph) of all vehicles was within the speed limit."

He added "I took a couple of short (7 second) clips of the SID in action and they clearly show that it is having an impact, with drivers slowing down as the SID flashes their speed to remind them that they are travelling too fast."

Alderley Edge Parish Council agreed to purchase one of these mini devices at their meeting on Monday, 13th February, and consider purchasing a second one in six months time once they have been able to ascertain its effectiveness.

You shudder when you realise even one vehicle was doing 64mph. You wonder if there is any brain power there at all.

Are there any figures for accidents on this road whilst the SID has been operating?

When was the last time anyone saw a real Police Officer on patrol in Alderley/Wilmslow/Handforth?
As a Homewatch co-ordinator I'm getting a bit edgy...
