Fire in airport tunnel causes delays

A fire in a tunnel which runs underneath a runway at Manchester Airport has caused disruptions to many flights this evening.

A vehicle burst into flames on the A538 earlier this evening. As a result Manchester Airport was temporarily closed and traffic was brought to a standstill.

The airport has now reopened but they have had to switch runway operations which is causing delays to some flights.

Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights with their airline.

I'm hijacking this subject slightly, so apologies, but it always amazes me that Health and Safety and all the Highway Code rules of the road come crashing down upon us, but yet the authorities allow one tunnel to have extremely bright lights in there that almost blind you, but yet a couple of seconds later you drive into the second tunnel and it's extremely dark with many of the overhead lights turned off, making it very difficult to adapt to the new circumstances.

I always understood that when entering long tunnels, the lights were supposed to gradually dim so your eyes can adjust to the new circumstances.
No doubt the authorities will say this is where the borders of Cheshire and Greater Manchester meet and one tunnel authority has no control over the other ?

Am I the only driver to find this procedure unusual ?

It is unusual David. It is the only tunnel I have been through where I actually pull my sun visor down at night because it hurts my eyes. Such a waste of electricity too. I prefer it in Spain where they are not that well illuminated but there are signs telling you to turn your lights on before you enter and to switch them off afterwards.
