Two people who have done so much to promote and understand the unique landscape of Alderley Edge will be sharing a platform next month.

Professor John Prag, co-ordinator of the Alderley Edge Landscape Project, will deliver the talk, entitled The Story of Alderley; Life on the Edge, at the annual lecture organised by the Friends of Blackden Trust.

He will be introduced by Alan Garner, the famous author who grew up in the village and whose books were inspired by the area.

In 1953 the schoolboy Alan rediscovered a wooden shovel, originally found by miners on the Edge in 1874, which in 1991 he presented to the Manchester Museum in the University of Manchester.

This, and the discovery of a hoard of over 500 Roman coins, inspired the creation of the Alderley Edge Landscape Project, a multi-disciplinary research programme, established by the Museum and the National Trust, who own most of the Edge, which aimed to study the entire history of Alderley, from geology to entomology, mining to oral history.

Professor Prag, who is Honorary Professor at Manchester Museum and Professor Emeritus of Classics, University of Manchester, will outline the work of the programme to the audience at Terra Nova School on Saturday 11 March at 3pm.

One of the organisers of the event, Jill Gover, said: "Alderley Edge is such a wonderful place and the inspiration for so much of Alan Garner's writing, and so it most appropriate that it is the subject of our annual Blackden Trust lecture.

"As well as listening to Professor Prag's unique insight, the audience will also be able to find out about all the wonderful work that is going on at The Blackden Trust. Tickets are limited and so I am sure they will sell out very quickly.

"The Friends of the Blackden Trust is a group of volunteers who fund raise and support events in The Old Medicine House and on site in many practical ways, from making the tea to leading tours of the house and assisting with courses for school children and students, in a voluntary capacity, according to their skills and preferences.

"If anyone feels they have the time and would like to become a volunteer, we would be pleased to hear from them."

There will be refreshments and a bookstall, and tickets, which cost £10, can be obtained from Brian Rich: email: [email protected] for a booking form or telephone 01538 384713.
