Plans to install floodlights and resurface tennis courts to extend play

Alderley Edge Cricket Club has submitted plans to re-surface some tennis courts and install floodlights on five courts to enable the facilities to be used more than at present.

The site has been used for playing sport since 1870 and has been a cricket and tennis club for nearly 150 years. There is one cricket pitch, five grass tennis courts and nine astro-turf tennis courts. Floodlights have been used on three of the tennis courts, on the east side of the ground since 2004, and there are temporary lights on a fourth court, on the south east side of the ground.

The Moss Lane club is seeking permission to replace five grass courts located on the west side of the club grounds with astro-turf, replace an existing grass-covered bank between the current grass courts with a retaining wall and introduce fencing around these courts.

The application also requests permission to install new flood-lights on courts 1, 2, 4, 5 on the west side of the grounds and replace temporary lights on court 14 on the south east corner of the grounds.

The re-surfaced tennis courts and floodlights would enable Alderley Edge Cricket Club to meet the increasing demand and allow play both in the evening and the winter as the current grass courts can only be used for a maximum of 50 days per year due to the weather.

The all-weather courts will provide increased capability to play all year round during daylight hours and the floodlights, which will be in use between the hours of 3.30pm and 10pm, are required to enable further use of the courts, particularly during the winter months.

The two applications can be viewed on the Cheshire East Council website by searching for planning reference 17/0345M and 17/0346M.

The last dates for submitting comments are 14th and 22nd February and decisions are expected to be made by 21st March.
