Churned up verges to be covered over

Cheshire East Council is planning to remove the grass verges from Oakfield Road and replace them with tarmac.

This decision has been taken because they have become unsightly due to vehicles parking off the road and churning the grass into mud.

Councillor Craig Browne said "A number of residents have spoken to me, at my monthly surgeries at Aldeli or when I have been out and about in the village, about the state of the verges on Oakfield Road and have asked whether anything can be done about them. I am still waiting for a firm date for the work to be carried out, but have been advised that it will be some time in late February or early March.

"Originally, I had asked CE Highways whether we could simply repair the grass verges; however this would have meant putting marker posts in to protect them from further damage in future and I was advised that this would not be possible due to the service connections lying underground. I am pleased to say that CE Highways have now agreed to tarmac over the existing verges between Crescent Road and Heyes Lane."

Councillor Browne added "I am sure most residents will agree that the work is needed and will help to make the footpaths both smarter and more accessible. Later in the spring, this will be complemented by the installation of dropped kerbs as well."

What a shame. Decent decorative pavement turned into mud by careless parking. We have the same problems in Gawsworth.

It's a shame the existing grass/verges couldn't be replaced with reinforced grid. Top dress and seed or turf over the top and it allows vehicles (if they have to) to park on it without damaging the surface.

I agree that these are an eyesore but it is a shame to lose any amount of green in the village. Large non movable planters would have been an option and kinder to the eye but I also think David's suggestion is a good one but what a shame these suggestions have come too late.

I suppose that's one way of making a some new car parking spaces ! Why not just place a few large rocks at strategic intervals as most private individuals do. Not only will it deter motorists but also save the cost of surfacing !
