Court orders driver to pay £180 for parking on Congleton Road

Following a number of complaints from local residents police officers have continued to monitor the parking situation on Congleton Road on a regular basis.

PCSO Sarah Stanley said "Since I have been working in Alderley Edge I have issued many Police Advisory Notices and Non-Endorsable Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) to vehicles that have been parked on Congleton Road alongside the central white lines.

"My aim was to advise, educate and reduce the number of vehicles parking at this location."

In May 2016 Sarah issued several FPN's to drivers who had parked their vehicles illegally. However, one of those drivers claimed he was not causing an obstruction and felt unfairly treated as he had received a fine when others before him had received an advisory notice.

The case was heard on Friday, 23rd December, at Stockport Magistrates Court. After discussions, the driver pleaded guilty for the offence of Unnecessary Obstruction and was ordered by the court to pay £180.

PCSO Sarah Stanley said "I would like to remind drivers that parking alongside double central white lines (continuous or broken) is an offence and courts will support the actions taken by Police staff and officers.

"I am working with colleagues and partner agencies to permanently solve the issue of vehicles parking at this location. Hopefully in 2017 we should see some changes on Congleton Road that will improve visibility for local residents and other road users."

She added "I will continue to monitor the area when on duty and issue FPNs where necessary until a permanent solution is found."

Here's a crazy idea, how about removing the double central white lines as this road is now a B road and would increase legal parking close to the town centre.

Move centre line over and mark proper bays all the way from the pub to where the road narrows. (Obviously double yellows as required to allow safe exit from driveways etc)

Yes a crazy idea! White line is there to indicate to drivers that it is unsafe to overtake!

Crazy is the operative word in this stupid suggestion.

The road is wide enough to take parking up one side and two way traffic is it not? Surely there's a way of marking it out safely to allow this??

I've been baffled for years by the obsession with catching speeders and the reluctance to make it not possible to do so.

Craig's suggestion surely isn't crazy - the "offence" PCSO Stanley refers to is parking in contravention of road markings and not to parking dangerously or inconsiderately.

So why not change the rules as Craig suggests???

Could we not mark out one side of the now minor road for parking? Could this not be done whilst leaving adequate road width for slow moving two direction traffic?

In this way passing traffic speed would necessarily decrease and legal safe parking space could be created.

Of course due consideration for access to property along the relevant stretch of road, together with carefully positioned, clear signage and perhaps even traffic calming measures would be needed.

Rather than simply condemning car users, how about we think about options to help them not be a problem???

Hey Craig, how about this for an idea: Park legally and walk, that what the lower limbs are for. Alternatively, park illegally and get what you deserve !! Bet you never park on double whites in Manchester - they tow you away !!!

Seen it all wherever I've lived. Parking on zebra crossings with a half empty car park only yards away just to save a couple of minutes buying a paper to the daily lunacy of schools pick up parked across corners and drives where again there is a car park 5min away. Bone idleness is the problem.

I could not agree more than with the suggestions front Stephen Justice and Craig.

Change the lines to remove the offence, create safe bays for each property and allow parking down one side.

This would help slow down traffic coming down into the village.

Adrian, I never need to park up that way as I live in Alderley edge, so walk from my house as required, or park in Waitrose, but parking is an issue here, and I see all those possible parking spots being unused, when they could (with a bit of thought) be legally used.

Those parking spaces could be all day spaces for people who need to drive here.

Same problem on Brook Lane, even a car parked alongside the central white lines this morning with no other cars parked just a few yards up, come on PCSO Sarah Stanley ticket the lot.
