Former teacher celebrates 100th birthday with double bash

A local ex-teacher and great-grandma marked her 100th birthday in style with a double bash, surrounded by family, friends and the staff of Brookview care home, where she is a resident.

Wolverhampton-born Muriel was thrown a huge party by family members at Alderley Edge hotel in the lead up to her birthday. Enjoying the limelight, Muriel took to the microphone to thank her guests for joining her in celebration and spoke of her happy memories.

When asked the secret to a long and fruitful life, Muriel said: "eat sensibly, exercise and go for long walks".

Muriel has one daughter named Ann, two grandchildren named Simeon and Naomi and two great grandchildren.

Disproving doctors, who told her mother that she wouldn't survive past birth, Muriel lead an exciting career as an English teacher. She started teaching at Wolverhampton School for Girls and then at Penkridge Secondary School.

She then went on to teach in Hong Kong, where she lived for four years with her RAF Officer Pilot husband.

Muriel wanted to be a teacher throughout her childhood, dreaming of wearing nice blouses like her own teachers; after receiving her first pay packet, she bought her first Marks & Spencer's blouse.

Every week, Muriel still enjoys going to Sunday church service and to the Wilmslow Methodist Church Luncheon Club on a Friday where she meets up with her friends.

The staff of Bupa-run Brookview care home arranged another party on her birthday at the home, which included carol singers from Alderley Edge School for Girls, in keeping with their busy Christmas-themed event calendar for December.

Brookview has a strong relationship with the school and Muriel thoroughly enjoys speaking to the students during their regular visits as it takes her back to her cherished career.
