Volunteers needed to clock speeding vehicles

PCSO Sarah Stanley is calling for more volunteers to join the Alderley Edge Speedwatch group.

They are looking to recruit additional members to the team to help monitor and record the vehicle details for those who are driving above the 30mph limit on the busiest roads in the village.

PCSO Stanley said "Myself and the existing team would like more members so we can regularly be out in Alderley raising awareness and educating those who are caught speeding.

"All we need is someone who can spend an hour once every two to four weeks during the week to help out. If anyone is interested they can contact myself via email."

Volunteers, who are trained in the use of a speed gun, spend an hour whenever they can and record the speed of passing vehicles on four main roads in the village: Brook Lane, Ryleys Lane, Congleton Road and Macclesfield Road. They record vehicles that are traveling in excess of 36mph in a 30 mile speed limit, motorists are then sent a warning letter from the police.

I have always been baffled by the seemingly contradictory efforts put into catching people speeding and the obsession with clearing the streets of parked vehicles to create long open routes for speeding along.

Rather than having indignant residents standing on street corners why don't we make the streets impossible to speed on, using traffic islands, lights, pedestrian crossings and parked vehicles as barriers?

Can you please add Mottram Road to the streets to be monitored for speeding. If you do I would be happy to volunteer for as many hours you need! It's like a race track here!

The main road (London Road), Alderley Edge is still in desperate need of speed watch and monitoring. Saturday's seem to be the worst day for speeding and high powered, racing cars, some must be travelling up to 70miles per hour EASY at times!

Agreed, more traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, speed signs would make a difference. I don't know why this hasn't been done on this road yet to be honest... So many people are concerned. The police are aware of the situation.
