I've heard people refer to the streets of Alderley Edge as being paved with gold, a saying which implies it's a place where they believe it is easy to become rich very quickly.
However, this morning local residents and visitors were greeted with streets paved with parking cones.
Large areas of the village centre were coned off this morning by Cheshire East Highways in preparation for lining work which will be carried out tomorrow to create 15 additional parking spaces.
Speaking about the work planned for Sunday, 11th December, Councillor Craig Browne explained said "Normally, CE Highways would not carry out this work during December, but they are doing it now to try and support the retailers in the village, particularly in the run up to Christmas. They are trying to carry out the work when it will cause the least disruption to trade, which is why Sunday has been chosen."
However, the appearance of all the cones today has resulted in several annoyed residents and workers in the village contacting us to complain about the loss of parking spaces on a Saturday in the run up to Christmas, and asking why this was necessary.
Emma Call of The Bubble Room, said "Absolutely baffled as to why - on a December Saturday half of the one hour bays in the village centre have been coned off in preparation for the work tomorrow? Is this a joke?!
"I thought they were supposed to be helping retailers etc during Christmas? This is totally bad planning....."
Councillor Craig Browne said "I hadn't been advised that they were going to put cones out this morning and the timing is a little unfortunate; however, CE Highways have done their best to get this work carried out before Christmas, which has meant them working over a weekend. Some disruption would have inevitably occurred whenever the work had been carried out, but hopefully the long term gain of an additional 15 parking spaces will make it worthwhile."

Oh for a 'parking czar', with an overview?
Is there still a fair chance of a very large car park? (wherever it goes).
Or even squeezing the money out of C.E. for phase two of the car park in the park ?
