Reader's Photo: The first car in Alderley Edge

Nowadays, Alderley Edge has a reputation for being home to plenty of high end luxury cars and car spotters can regularly be seen hanging out on London Road with their cameras and tablets at the ready waiting to get a shot of them.

Obviously going back 100 years there were very few cars on our local roads but Stephen Lawton has kindly sent us this photo of the very first car in Alderley Edge, which was purchased in 1916.

His grandfather and grandmother Harry and Phyllis Hidderley ran Hidderley's haberdashery shop on London Road for nearly 50 years, up until the early 1960's when it was sold and the premises was occupied by a Chinese restaurant until a few years ago.

Stephen told me "My mother Josie has often told of how Harry, her father, had the first car in Alderley Edge.

"He was 16 in 1916 and it was in fact his father's car, Jack Hidderley, a joiner in Alderley Edge. But this new technology was not to his liking, so it was Harry who was left with the task of working out how to get it moving!"

Stephen has recently come across this photo of the family in the car showing Tabitha, Constance Helen, Peggy, and Harry getting a driving lesson with Jack Hidderley.
