Hockey: Mixed fortunes for Edge

Laidies 1s Sept 2016

Mixed fortunes for Edge as they settle into the season playing what, for many, is the highest level hockey they've ever played...

The Ladies 1st XI won their inaugural match in North League div 1, the highest league they've ever played in, with a cracking 2-1 win over local rivals Brooklands Poynton 2s.

Brooklands Poynton were first on the scoreboard after 11 mins when their Captain, Jennie Brown, tapped in a deflected penalty corner. Edge hit back hard and started to control possession with some strong running, width and excellent passing which enabled Ellie Ward to level the score before half time.

Edge dominated possession in the second half and the winner came after 50 minutes when Amanda Bennison rounded the keeper and flicked the ball into the goal. The ladies host Newcastle University next weekend.

The 2s travelled to Chester for their Cheshire League div 1 fixture against Chester's 2 XI and won 4-0.
In what was a physical match, first half saw three goals from Edge - the first from Liv Moores, the second from Caitlin Polley's penalty flick and the third from a fine solo effort from Ruby Nelson.
Captain Claire Davison rounded things off in the second half scoring from a short corner. The Ladies 3s match against Winnington Park in the same league was postponed.

The 5s had a tough fixture against Neston at the Edge and went down 4-0 and the 6s has an equally challenging away match against Runcorn 2s. Runcorn went ahead early with an unfortunate goal with Emma Fluck equalising for Edge before half time from a penalty corner. A change in formation from Edge in the second half lead to two quick goals from Runcorn before Emma scored again to make it 3-2. A final Runcorn goal saw the final score at 4-2.

In better news, the 7s notched up their first win, beating Wilmslow 4s 4-2.

The Mens 1xt XI played their opening fixture in North Premier League and went down a disappointing 1-3 at home to Whitley Bay & Tynemouth at home. They have a more local fixture next week away to Bowdon 2s.

The 2s dominated the majority of their game in North league div 1 against Preston to claim an important 2-1 win in their opening North League div 1 match. Goals from Joe Coxon and Khalid Sawas gave Alderley a 2-0 lead, however further chances weren't taken and Preston pulled a goal back with three minutes remaining.

The 3s enjoyed a 3-1 home win against Mossley Hill 1s in North West div 3 with Andy Walker and Oliver Wildig on the score sheet scoring two and one goals respectively. The 4s were not so lucky in their division 4 game, travelling away to face Liverpool Sefton 2s and losing 2-1.

The Mens 5s also had a difficult afternoon in their first ever game in division 4 with a 0-7 loss to Neston 4s. A nice trip to Colwyn Bay awaits next week

The 6s were also up against it, fielding a young team against the larger, more experienced and physical Lymm 3s. However, Edge's boys came of age with a fantastic 4-1 win.

There were goals galore for the Badgers who were in action at Wilmslow High School. Their first game ended with a 10-5 victory against Chester, before going down 5-3 to Brooklands Poynton.

All in all a busy few days for the Club which has also hosting an Argentinian ladies team on part of their UK tour.
