Spectators are being urged to arrive in plenty of time to watch the Cheshire leg of the Tour of Britain – with rolling road closures in place across Cheshire East throughout the day.

Comprising a total of eight stages, the race heads to Cheshire East for Stage Three on Tuesday, September 6th, and will see riders cycling 111 miles between Congleton and Tatton Park in Knutsford, setting off just after 11am and finishing at around 3.30pm. It is the only stage that is being held completely within one county.

To minimise disruption across the Borough, all roads on the route will be closed using a rolling roadblock for around 40 minutes, both 20 minutes before and after the cyclists are expected to pass through each town.

The roadblocks will be managed by police motorcycle escorts and spectators are warned to arrive in plenty of time to avoid the closures. The cyclists are estimated to arrive in Great Warford at 1.20pm, travel up Brook Lane at 1.23pm and be in the centre of the village for the sprint finish at 1.26pm before heading up Macclesfield Road.

In Alderley Edge, Knutsford Road will be closed to the junction with Brook Lane and the following roads will be closed for their full extent: Brook Lane, Wilmslow Road, London Road and Macclesfield Road.

Macclesfield Road in Nether Alderley will be closed to the junction with Prestbury Road, and Chelford Road will be closed for its full extent.

In Over Alderley, Prestbury Road, School Lane, Prestbury Road and Chelford Road will be closed for their full extent, as will Knutsford Road and Chelford Road in Chelford, Chelford Road in Marthall and Chelford Road in Ollerton.

Those thinking of attending the start of the race in Congleton need to be aware that Market Street, High Street/Lawton Street and one side of Mountbatten Way will be closed from 4.30am.

While the closures are in place, pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, as will vehicle access for emergency services and residents.

Councillor David Brown, Deputy Leader of Cheshire East Council, said: "I urge all residents and spectators to view the Cheshire Tour of Britain website for details of where and when the road closures will be in place, so that you can plan your journeys in advance.

"We know that many people will be travelling from outside the Borough to watch the race and so I urge them to also take note of the closures and allow extra time for their journeys.

"The Council has worked hard to minimise disruption for its residents while the race takes place and I hope that as many people as possible will be watching this exciting event as it makes its way across the Borough."

To celebrate stage 3 of the Tour Of Britain coming through Alderley Edge a team of 12 from Chafes Solicitors LLP will be doing a charity static bike ride at their Alderley Edge office. They will be taking it in turns during the course of the day to ride as much as they can of the 111.6 miles that makes up stage 3.

All the proceeds will be donated to local charity David Lewis so look out for them on the 6th September in their orange t -shirts with their orange buckets and orange balloons.

Aldeli on Wilmslow Road have invited children from Alderley Edge Primary School to watch the race from outside their premises and they are also setting up an area for wheelchair users, offering a great spot from which to view the riders as they race by just ahead of the sprint finish. Anyone wishing to access this area is requested to call 01625 587509.
