Alderley girls celebrate A level success

Students and staff at Alderley Edge School for Girls are celebrating another fantastic set of results at A-level. Once again, the overall pass rate was 100%, with 40% of grades either A* or A. One fifth of the girls achieved straight A* and A grades including four girls with 2 or more A* grades.

Particular congratulations to Iona Morphet who achieved the equivalent of 3A* grades and an A to secure her place to study Classics at Newnham College, Cambridge and to Tatiana Wilson who achieved the equivalent of 2A* grades and 3A grades to secure her place to study Biochemistry at New College, Oxford.

Alexandra Glover and Fiona Smith each gained 2 A* grades and an A grade and will study Biological Sciences at Durham University and Geography at Leeds University respectively.

Over 80% of students obtained a place at their first choice university; some have chosen to stay close to home and to study at one of Manchester's universities, whereas others will go further afield including to Aberystwyth, Birmingham, Nottingham, Brighton and York.

A high proportion of girls have chosen to study STEM courses at university, including Civil and Structural Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. As always, the girls have chosen a wide variety of courses, from traditional academic courses such as Law, Geography and Languages to more vocational courses including Business Management and Marketing, Rural Land Management and Fashion Design.

In addition to gaining excellent results in their A-level subjects, many girls found time to achieve other notable successes during their time in the Sixth Form including six girls who obtained their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, seven girls who passed the EPQ (including 2 with A* grades) and two girls who were finalists in the Young Fashion Designer UK competition.

Headmistress Mrs Sue Goff said: "These are yet again stunning results for the girls and I am so pleased for them. This morning has been very rewarding for teachers, parents and girls as we have celebrated the girls' successes and confirmed the university places with them. We wish them all well on the next exciting stage of their academic career."

Across Cheshire East 1,526 students received their results this morning and they have again achieved a provisional pass rate of 99 per cent, which is above the national average of 98 per cent.

The further breakdown of grades shows that the proportion of students achieving grades A* to A was 26.4 per cent, which is higher than the proportion nationally and 54 per cent achieved an A* to B grade.
