Students at Wilmslow High School were celebrating another set of impressive A level results today, 52% of which were A* to B grades.
Overall 27% of the results were graded A* and A and 8% were A*. In total 44 students achieved the equivalent of 3 A grades or above in their A levels or BTECs and 16% of A level students achieved AAB or higher.
Amongst the top achievers were Rachel Stoner and Tom McIntosh who will soon be donning the light blue colours of the University of Cambridge, while Samuel Atherton chose instead to pursue the challenge of Mathematics at the University of Warwick.
Some other noteworthy individual achievements include Iona Darroch and Saskia Swatland who managed to break into the U21 England netball squad and U18 England hockey squad respectively this year whilst completing their A-levels and achieving 3 A grades.
Just after opening her results Saskia, who is going on to study mechanical engineering at Nottingham University, said "I am over the moon, it has been really hard work."
Honor Greenwood who gained a place to study Art at the very prestigious Central St Martin's College in London and Dalia Oudeh who joined Wilmslow High School from an international school in Syria and achieved 4 A grades.
Meanwhile brothers Juan and Miguel Vilches Narro who joined Wilmslow from their home in Spain at the start of the sixth form when they spoke barely any English, went on to achieve identical results: A*, A and B - as well as being key members of the school's triumphant Cheshire Cup winning senior football team.
Juan Vilches Narro said "I want to thank the school for making me the person I am. I think I have changed so much since coming here, I used to be lazy."
Headteacher, Dr James Pulle, commented "This has been an another year of remarkable achievement for Wilmslow High school and these superb results for our Year 13 students are a further cause for celebration. It is delightful to see so many of our students heading off to university or starting careers having achieved excellent qualifications.
"However, there is a great deal more to Wilmslow High School than just passing examinations: these students have made a huge contribution to the life of the school through supporting the learning and welfare of younger students, assisting in the running of extracurricular activities, representing the school in high profile events such as the Model UN General Assembly, Young Enterprise, Bar Mock Trial and achieving highly in the national schools competitions in football, hockey, netball and rugby. We know they will go on to achieve much more at university and in their careers and wish them well in the exciting challenges and opportunities that life will bring.
"I am sure they will join me in expressing thanks for the continuing support of their parents and the hard work and commitment provided by school staff over their years of secondary education."
Students at Wilmslow High continue to excel in STEM disciplines such as medicine, engineering, physics, chemistry and biology, while undergraduate courses in Business, Mathematics and Finance have remained popular choices this year.
Others have successfully applied to university to read subjects including English, Modern Languages, History, Geography, Politics, Criminology, Sociology, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry and Economics. Additionally of the students are keen to pursue sport as a career and have gained places on a range of related courses.
The school is also proud of the large number of students who will be studying Law in the autumn in addition to those who have chosen more practical subjects such as Fashion, Media Studies and Graphic Design.
This year, students have been accepted at a broad range of institutions, with a high percentage joining a Russell Group university, and they have received the largest ever number of unconditional offers.
Whilst many students will be heading to university in the autumn, Katie Orr who achieved an A* in maths, A in photography and A in ICT, has had a change of heart. She explained "I signed up to go to university and was definitely going to go there but in the last week I got offered an apprenticeship at Royal London so I think I am going to do that.
"I can then earn while I learn which I think is a better path for me."
