Smart meters coming to Alderley Edge

A planning application to install new equipment at the telephone exchange to provide a smart metering network have been approved.

Arqiva have been granted permission to erect a pole mounted antenna and cabinet on the rooftop of the telephone exchange on Moss Lane. The existing cabinet will be removed from the site.

Arqiva has been appointed by the Department of Energy & Climate Change to develop the Smart Meter infrastructure network in the north of England and Scotland. This Government programme is being rolled out between 2014 and 2020 to provide the next generation of gas and electricity meters that will offer a range of intelligent functions and provide consumers with more accurate information.

Smart Meters will bring an end to estimated billing and provide consumers with near-real time information on their energy consumption so they can manage their energy use to save money and reduce emissions.

Other locations were considered including St Philip's Church, St Pius X Catholic Church, Queens Court, Barrington House and the Festival Hall but they were all deemed unsuitable.

The planning application can be viewed on the Cheshire East Council website by searching for planning reference 16/2775M.

Smart meters have nothing to do with saving consumers money. No business introduces measures that will impact on its revenue. Anyone thinking of having a smart meter installed should check this out: http://stopsmartmeters.org.uk/ By the way, these meters are not mandatory, at least not yet.
