Cold callers attempting to sell generators

Following our report last week that an elderly man who suffers from Alzheimer's disease was persuaded to hand over money £450 for a generator, the police have confirmed that this was not an isolated incident.

Between Wednesday 13th and Thursday, 14th July Cheshire Police received five reports of suspicious activity in Macclesfield, Alderley Edge and Knutsford. The reports were of cold callers turning up at addresses in these areas attempting to sell generators.
Inspector Cath Mitchell said: "In one incident in Heywood Road, Alderley Edge on 14 July an elderly man was taken to a cash machine to withdraw money for a generator he didn't want or know what to do with. The man who was in a confused state felt pressured to take the generator at the time.

"We are working with Trading Standards in relation to the incidents, but have not had any further reports. If you do have elderly neighbours it is advisable to keep an eye out for them as a matter of course, and report any suspicious behaviour to police on 101."

Anyone with information on the incident in Heywood Road should call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident 579 of 14 July 2016.

Alternatively information can be given anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
