Runners race along the paths and trails on The Edge

The annual Wizard 5 running race, organised by Wilmslow Running Club, proved another great success last week.

The weather had been wet, and the rain only eased up as the race started at 7:30 in the evening. However, that didn't seem to dampen the enthusiasm of the 243 runners who set off from the top of Alderley Edge on Thursday, 7th July, for a 5 mile course over tracks, paths and stiles between the Edge and Hare Hill.

The race was won by Damian Nichols of Wilmslow Running Club and Ellen Downs of Stockport Harriers was the first lady to complete the course.

The team prizes were collected by Wilmslow Running Club for the men, and Stockport Harriers for the ladies.

Andy Watts said "The race proceeds of around £1,100 will be donated to the Stockport Cerebral Palsy Society, whose volunteers guided runners round the course, providing welcome support and encouragement, especially on the steep climb into Daniel Hill Wood!

"Many thanks to them, as well as to the volunteers from Cheshire Search and Rescue (who provided first-aid support - thankfully not called upon), and also to the National Trust at Alderley Edge and Hare Hill for hosting the event."
