Open gardens raise thousands for charity

Wilmslow Wells for Africa ran another very successful Open Gardens Day on Saturday, June 25th.

Visitors were able to wander around the 19 gorgeous gardens in Wilmslow, Handforth and Alderley Edge raising £11,280 for the local charity - which will be used to provide sources of clean water in drought-stricken areas all over Africa.

Chairman Jenny Gibbs said "As a charity we cannot emphasise enough how much we appreciate the work of the gardeners and their opening of their gardens for us. It is not just hours of work on the day but also the hours spent for many, many months before.

"Their skills are highly appreciated not just locally but also by visitors from a wide area. Inclement weather does not deter the visitors as they know that it is such enjoyable day."

Jenny added "Sat in St John's, I talked to quite a few who had never been to Gardens Day before and they were beaming as they talked about the beautiful gardens that they had already visited and were looking forward to seeing more.

"One retired member of our General Committee came to St John's to help with preparations before going around the gardens for the very first time. She could not sing their praises enough!! Weeks of hot, dry weather and then torrential downpours failed to detract in any way from what is such an anticipated day of delights. It is a wonderful community event."

In a month's time Wilmslow Wells for Africa will have a trustees' meeting where decisions will be made about a number of grant applications they have received.

Jenny continued "On looking through reports from recently completed projects, and reading of the difference that the provision of an accessible, clean source of water makes to lives, it shows how worthwhile Gardens Day is. We would like to thank all the gardeners, the many visitors plus all the helpers for enabling us to raise such a good sum, so that more projects can be completed."

We managed to get round 10 of the 19 gardens on Saturday. It really was a great event. The gardens were so beautiful, diverse and inspiring and the garden owners were very friendly and happy to talk all things plants (and slugs)! Probably the best tenner I've spent in a long time. Well done to everyone involved, and thank you.
