It could be magic! Wizards stake claim on new Guinness World Record

It was a magical site in Alderley Edge on Sunday, 19th June, when hundreds of wizards gathered to take part in a charity walk and help create a new Guinness World Record.

After all the rain in the run-up to the event they were blessed with a lovely warm, dry day - while it mattered.

Nearly 300 wizards took part in a Wizard Walk around the village on Father's Day, aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the 'largest gathering of wizards', which currently stands at 250 wizards.

The two mile stroll was organised by Maxipotential, an organisation set up by Saz Bailey to raise funds for her 8 year old son Max Bailey who has scoliosis (collapsing spine). Max, who attends Alderley Edge Community Primary School, requires surgery before his curve impacts his internal organs and becomes life threatening.

The family fun day kicked off with the Grand Wizard Assembly where walkers were transformed into their wizardry greatness before setting off from Chorley Hall Lane playing field for a two mile walk around the village.

Saz Bailey said "It was brilliant to see so many people with a great sense of humour and a will to support Max and our cause. The sight of all those wizards walking thorough fields and down the hughstreet was spectacular."

She added "290 wizards showed up to walk. 268 participated in the Guinness World Record. 5 exited the control zone! We lost a few hats in the wind during the 5 minute timed record. We have to omit these in our count. We think we can safely claim a 252 record but we have to send all the evidence to GWR and see what they say.

"Alderley's claim to a world record for the largest gathering of wizards is now entirely in their hands!"

Walkers were entertained in the park with a busking wizard, a wizard on roller skates who they had to catch for a selfie and three bridge trolls challenging walkers to pass.

After the walk the 'Grand Wizard Assembly' took place on the field at Alderley Community Primary School where a wizard naming ceremony was held. Individuals chose their wizard name which was added to the National Council Register of Wizards.

Saz explained "Each wizard threw their name into mystical coloured flames and received a certificate of re-naming."

There was also an inflatable pub, where the wizards could get a pie and a pint, a BBQ plus other refreshments and the twenty 'Dare your Daddy' stations - with daft challenges from a quidditch league to a bush tucker style 'potion-off', pie face, speed balloon modelling other crazy shenanigans.

Afterwards it took about half an hour to count all the wizards into the control zone which was on constant video audit, for the Guinness World Record attempt.

The long stream of wizards were issued with sequenced number wrist bands and videoed for the audit which revealed, to much cheering and smiles, that they had hit their number by two wizards.

With the rain having held off for the walk and most of the celebrations, the heavens opened but fortunately the wizards had a pub to sit in and celebrate.

Saz concluded "I had the vision for the event but TEAM MAX pulled it off on the day for me. They all gave their time, energy and resources to make it the really special experience I wanted it to be. I set out to create a special experience to look back and smile about. I think some incredible memories we're created for a lot of our children. I hope so.

"We've had some wonderfully positive comments. People really enjoyed the community feel of the day and would like more. We will definitely be back with Wizard Walk 2017. Maybe we'll shoot for 500 wizards next time!"

The money raised will enable Max Bailey to continue with his treatment in America and go towards travel, accommodation, therapy clinics, replacement 3D braces, an adapted wheelchair and car adaptations.
