Youngsters have whale of a time celebrating National Bookstart Week

Alderley Edge Library celebrated National Bookstart Week with a visit from the Bookstart Bear on Friday, 10th June.

Families in Alderley Edge took part in reading and rhyming adventure to fit in with this year's theme Under the Sea. It was based on the fun picture book 'A Hole in the Bottom of the Sea' by Jessica Law, a copy of which was given out to every child that attended the event.

Janet Haley, Senior Library Assistant, said "Parents attending the event described it as fun, colourful and enjoyable."

National Bookstart Week is the annual celebration of UK charity BookTrust's flagship reading programme, Bookstart. It encourages families to pick-up a book together and get into the habit of reading every day - even if it's just for ten minutes.

The event in Alderley Edge Library was one of hundreds taking place across England during the week as over 450,000 books were gifted to pre-school children by BookTrust.

Diana Gerald, Chief Executive of Book Trust said: "Sharing a book is a magical experience which every child should benefit from. For a few minutes the outside world stops while you read about sharks or pirates.

"Research has shown that if a parent reads to their infant every day they will be almost 12 months ahead of those who are read to less often, in terms of their reading and language skills."
