Reader's Photo: Steam train passing through Alderley Edge in 1951

FullSizeRender

Following the photos I published earlier in the week of the iconic Flying Scotsman passing through Alderley Edge, Kelvin Briggs sent me this photo of another steam train passing through Alderley Edge in 1951.

He recently acquired a print of this LMS Crab 2-6-0 no 42887, which was built in Crewe in 1930, passing through the village.

Kelvin said "Spot 'The Yard' in the background although it was possibly a motor dealers repair shop at the time, Royles."

The picture was taken by a retired medical scientist and railways enthusiast called Ben Brooksbank

There are many of Bens pictures on http://www.geograph.org.uk including another picture of a Hughes/Fowler 5P 4F train bound for Plymouth taken from Chorley Hall Lane Bridge on 28 July 1951. Interesting to see the village and path by the allotments in the background .

In the far right distance you can see Alderley's up home signal which will have just returned to danger behind the train. To its right is the small goods yard, now occupied by a supermarket. I remember seeing a Super-D 0-8-0 shunting wagons there in 1958. Part of the buildings on the right are surely Massey's Yard?

The line on the left is the refuge siding usually used for passenger trains awaiting departure from Alderley to Manchester. It was subsequently extended at the south end to form a loop. I remember a 2-10-0 Standard simmering there all afternoon around 1960.
