In Pictures: All the fun of the 2016 Alderley Edge May Fair

Despite the weather, today's Alderley Edge May Fair was another big success.

Unfortunately the sun didn't shine like last year but hundreds of local people and visitors braved the showers to enjoy a fun packed day.

The celebrations started with a parade through the village led by the Town Crier, featuring the White Horse and Wizard of Alderley, 5th Manchester Bugle Band, players from Alderley Edge Hockey Club, fancy dress contestants, vintage bicycles, dance groups, The Galactic Knights and vintage vehicles.

The May Queen Laura Maclean, aged 9, and her attendants Erin Moran and Merlina Holmes, who are also both 9 years old, travelled in a horse drawn carriage.

The crowd then headed down to Alderley Edge Park where Laura declared the 2016 Alderley Edge May Fair officially open.

Entertainment in the arena included dog training displays, dancing ponies, circus clowns, sheepdog demonstrations, a brass band and Alderley Edge Dog Olympics. Whilst over on the live music stage our local talent performed throughout the afternoon.

Amongst the many attractions in the park there was a fun dog show, hockey coaching, zorb balls, bouncy castles, fairground rides, vintage photo booth and a wildlife display as well as a host of stalls from local businesses and organisations.

Paul Marshall, Chairman of the Alderley Edge May Fair Committee, said "It illustrates the true spirit of our village that on a day that wakes to a terrible weather forecast, the attendance of this year's May Fair was still very good.

"During the afternoon, many stall holders and entertainers told me that they would like to return next year and the overwhelming reason was because of the people who attend the May Fair. And that is a compliment to the residents of Alderley Edge."

The fun isn't over though because this year the May Fair will be followed by an artisan market tomorrow, Sunday 22nd May, from 11am until 4pm.

As well as the fairground rides, live performance stage and bar area The Makers Market are bringing over 70 stalls showcasing Cheshire's very finest bakers, growers, crafters and foodies.

Loose Change Buskers, the talented and inspirational group of 30 strong musicians, will be entertaining the crowds and there will be face painters for the little market visitors plus a pop up vintage tea shop.

A big thank you to all the organisers and volunteers who helped make this years May Fair another enjoyable experience for the local community. The children from Alderley Edge Hockey Club had great fun in the parade and enjoyed the novelty of playing hockey on the tennis court in the park.

Our volunteers always look forward to participating. We would encourage other Alderley based organisations, societies and children groups to either join the parade or take a stand in the park to promote their activities.

We can actually identify current members who took up hockey as a result of 'having a go' at previous May Fairs. This year was no exception with a few children who tried hockey on Saturday coming along to our Junior Sunday morning session.

The more the merrier for May Fair 2017. Let's see some new faces next year at this great shop window for our community!
