There are some days in life that are truly memorable.
I experienced such a day last Saturday at my Congleton Dog Behaviour Clinic where over two-dozen owners brought their unruly dogs for help with a multitude of behaviour issues.
Some owners were so overwrought with emotion they could hardly tell their story. Others had 'tried everything' to resolve their dog's uncontrollable behaviour and were thoroughly frustrated.
One tearful lady told me she was so 'emotionally exhausted' by her dog's anti-social behaviour she was ready to give up.
Looking at the behaviour of their dogs these owners weren't exagerating.
What they didn't realise was their dogs were just as unhappy and stressed as they were.
Dogs are by nature sociable animals (they have to be to live in a pack). They know anti-social behaviour is wrong and that no pack would accept them. They just don't know what to do about it. When they are shown the path back to balanced behaviour they ALWAYS follow it... because it feels right.
Within 15 minutes most of these stressed-out, nervous, anti-social dogs were trotting along with me as happy as could be. One large angry muzzled hound who, the owner told me had to be walked at night to 'avoid other dogs,' joined me and my dogs for a pack walk within 20 minutes of us meeting.
This isn't magic...anyone can do it when they have the know how to do so. With understanding, leadership and commitment any dog is capable of rehabilitation. No owner should be stressed by their dog's behaviour (or vice versa).
