Young bookworms celebrate successful reading challenge

Alderley Edge Library hosted an awards ceremony on Thursday, 10th September, for the youngsters who completed this year's Summer Reading Challenge.

Councillor Craig Browne presented medals and certificates to the children who had completed the challenge by reading six books over the summer.

Out of the 83 children who started the challenge 53 children read all six books and approximately 35 children attended the ceremony.

Janet Haley said "We were really pleased as there was an increase of 30% in the number of children who completed that challenge in comparison to last year. We are hoping that the children who enjoyed the challenge and reading over the summer will continue to visit the library and enjoy the books and resources available."

Councillor Craig Browne commented "I'd like to congratulate the young people on their achievement and thank parents for encouraging their children to use Alderley Edge library. Libraries are an essential community, cultural and educational resource.

"At a time when they are facing closure in other parts of the country, it is vital we are able to demonstrate that libraries remain relevant to the next generation of users. I think the fact that the scheme has engaged roughly 30% more young people this year than last, helps to show that that is the case."

Children who weren't able to attend the ceremony can collect their medals and certificates from the library.
