Free weekly timed 2k runs for juniors kick off

Following the successful launch of Wilmslow parkrun in April, a weekly 2k junior parkrun will start next month for 4 to 14 year olds.

Wilmslow junior park run will be a fun, free event organised by volunteers in the Carrs every Sunday morning. Following a trial run on Sunday, 2nd August, the junior parkrun will take place every Sunday from August 16th.

Starting at 9.30am runners will set off from near the children's playground and head along the path away from the play area, over the footbridge to Twinnies Bridge. Runners will then turn around and head back to the finish via the same route. The finish is in the same place as the start.

The course will be run entirely on tarmac paths and marshals will located along the course so that juniors will be in sight of a marshal at all times.

Wilmslow Town Council and Waters Wilmslow Half Marathon provided £1500 each to enable the weekly 2k run to be set up. Whilst parkrun is organised by volunteers a start up fund was required to covered the cost of equipment, laptop, stopwatch timers, barcode scanners, cones, signage, finish tokens, training and IT support.

Parkrun is a not-for-profit operation which has been going for nearly nine years with over 300 active locations. The original 5k run, for all age groups, was launched in Wilmslow in April and has proved very popular with 150 people taking part each week.

Parkrun rely on parents and runners coming forward to help in order to keep the runs going and they are always looking for new volunteers. Click here if you would like to get involved.

Anyone wishing to take part in the 2k or 5k parkrun must is requested to register before their first run. You only need to register with parkrun once.
