Adults invited to take on summer reading challenge

For the first time Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Handforth libraries are offering adults the opportunity to take part in a Summer Reading Challenge and those completing the challenge by the end of September will be in with the chance of winning a £50 shopping voucher.

While under 12's can take part in the Record Breaker's Summer Reading Challenge, adults are encouraged to dip into new reading experiences such as 'something exotic' and 'something funny'. It's up to individual readers how they interpret the six categories and if you're struggling to find a suitable book, library staff will be on hand with helpful displays and suggestions. There is also a list of recommended websites to explore and help you to find your next favourite author and if a traditional book isn't your cup of tea downloadable audio and eBooks are available to borrow free of charge, as well as quick reads if you're looking for something shorter.

Emily Morrey said "There are rewards beyond the chance to win the £50 voucher; enjoying fiction can increase your health and wellbeing, even improving brain function. There are suggestions that reading novels increases literacy, vocabulary and empathy, and of course it is a great stress-buster. And if you are the parent or carer of a child taking part in the 'Record Breakers' challenge, your involvement in the Something New Challenge will show your little one just how important reading is to everyone, old and young."

Forms are available from Alderley Edge library and also from the Cheshire East website.
