Graham McLelland has sent us this photo of the Wilmslow St Bartholomew's Brass Band which was taken around 1961-2 in their brand new uniforms

Graham was in band and can identify some but not all of the other members.

He told me "I do remember some of the names. The conductor sitting holding the baton was Reg Jenkins, moving to right of the picture the last three men were Len Cooper, Harold Hewitt and Len Phillips.

"In the second row after three trombone players are Reg Jones, tenor horn Mike Jenkins, tenor horn nephew of Reg and beside him his father the brother of Reg. On the back row I am the 4th one in on flugel horn but sorry I cannot remember any more names.

"Apart from Len Phillips, Mike Jenkins and myself from Alderley Edge, all the others were Wilmslow men.

"We rehearsed at Chancel Lane school, where the new Church Hall is now, and did the rose queens of Wilmslow, Alderley, Peover and Morley. We also had old time dances in Wilmslow Parish Hall on Water Lane."

If you can identify anyone in the photo please do let us know via the comment box below.

What an interesting photo. I play 2nd Euphonium in St Bart's Brass band.
I will let the band member know as there are a number of players that will be able to put names to faces, as the Jones and Jenkins connection is still within the band.

Hi Karen thats amazing Reg Jones the tenor player had a brother 3rd in from the end on right he was principle cornet in those days. The cornet player on rear row second in from the left had a brother who is standing on second row on right at end he was trombone player. Seemed even then and maybe before there were many familt connections .Be good to see any older photos of the band .Glad it is still playing .

Graham, if you can send a copy of the picture I can ask my Dad (Reg Jones - still occasional Tenor Horn for the band!) to help you out with some names. Not sure how to get my contact details to you without sharing though.

Mark ,Thanks to Alan Downes I have all the names which are on the Wilmslow web site .Brilliant pice of local history ,maybe the band has a record of their past ie championships old photographs etc which should be preserved .I have seen in a book of Wilmslow a picture of the band at Queen Victorias celebrations 1894? and in Delph/Diggle taking part in the brass band competitions .Alderley Edge also at the time had a championship brass band winning at Belle View .Be good to get a collection of thos pictures for local interest and history. They used to practise over the garage in Traafford road Alderley which is now houses. Two of their members that I know of Jack Burgess (who was principle cornet for a time with Manchester either CWS or Fairys band and Billy Limb who lived in Clifton street played with CWS Manchester then became a pro trumpet player in and around London playing later for many yrs with Joe Loss.
All local history .
