Additional superfast broadband in Alderley Edge

Alderley Edge

The last local cabinet, outside the main telephone exchange on Moss Lane, was switched on to fibre broadband last week.

Connecting Cheshire has funded 15 new fibre broadband cabinets in the Alderley Edge telephone exchange area, bringing superfast broadband to over 3,500 premises.

You can check the availability of fibre broadband via the Connecting Cheshire website.

'Superfast' fibre broadband? Probably not! This is only 'fibre to the cabinet'; the link from the roadside cabinet to your premises is still the slow old copper wire pair telephone line. We opted for fibre broadband a year ago and yes, we did see an increase in speed. But superfast? No!

Just how much faster your broadband will be if you change to fibre depends on the distance between the cabinet and your house. The theoretical maximum of 100Mbps (megabits per second) at the cabinet falls rapidly to about 30Mbps 300m from the cabinet (not as the crow flies, but as the cable runs). In practice we get about 18Mbps at best (contention, or how many other users are connected, also affects performance).

To enjoy true high speed broadband requires fibre to the premises and sufficient bandwidth to ensure contention issues are not a problem, but providing this would call for considerably higher investment than does the halfway house of fibre to the cabinet.
