A cat which had been roaming around Alderley Edge for some time has been reunited with its owners who live over 140 miles away.

Dee Blow called Tregony Jane Windsor from Animal Support Volunteers on Friday, 3rd July, to help her locate the owners of the black cat. Tregony went round to her house and scanned the cat.

Dee explained "We found that the cat was chipped. However, we were both very surprised to find out that Witchy the cat had come all the way from Cirencester."

Witchy, who had been missing for nearly 4 weeks, has now been reunited with her owners and their two daughters who live 8 miles east of Cirencester.

Helen Lumborg said "We still have no idea how Witchy made her way to Alderley Edge, but we guess she got into a car or van and was transported all or most of the way by an unsuspecting driver.

"We have two daughters, Freda (8) and Kitty (7), and we didn't tell them that we'd found Witchy after Dee made contact on Friday night. My husband snuck off at 6am the following morning to collect her and bring her home. So, it was only when he walked through the door at 1pm yesterday with the cat box, and Witchy inside it, that the girls found out."

Helen added "We had searched the local area, handed out leaflets, visited our neighbours, made a Facebook plea, called the local vets and rescue places, and put up posters, and we had had just one response, where another black cat had been spotted. We were giving up hope as no-one had even spotted her - but it makes sense now.

"If it wasn't for the chip, we would never have discovered what had become of Witchy, and would have supposed that she'd got stuck somewhere or caught by a fox, so I'd encourage anyone with a cat to get them chipped."

Animal Support Volunteers are a group of people based around Alderley Edge who are dedicated to helping animals in need.

Thank you Lisa for bringing the success of microchipping pets to the fore. Readers will have seen in the Forum that we have had two other successful outcomes in the past three weeks! However, it is imperative that all contact details are current especially mobile phone numbers. Two of these three cats were registered to previous addresses; one in Wilmslow which I could follow up personally but the other address was in Deptford! Fortunately, the mobile phone number was still current and the owner traced to a few hundred yards away from the finder.

If you suspect that a stray cat (or dog) has chosen you as a "new" owner - please don't hesitate to ring the Animal Support Volunteers on 0800 298 4884 or 07885 458 583 and I will gladly bring my scanner in the hope that the animal is chipped.

If, on the other hand, your pet IS chipped - please consider if you might need to change the contact details and do so right away. It is a good idea to keep your Microchip Certificate along with your other Very Important Paperwork!
