Alderley Edge Library is encouraging young readers to explore some of the amazing achievements and world records as featured in the Guinness World Records Books as part of the Summer Reading Challenge 2015.

Organsied by The Reading Agency charity and the public library network, the annual Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at 4 - 11 year olds. They are encouraged to visit their local library 4 times and read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays.

From Saturday, 4th July, children aged 12 and under can sign up to take part for free, by popping down to the library with their library card and collecting an information pack. Each child who completes the challenge is invited to a special ceremony in September where they receive a medal and a certificate for all their effort.

Every year there is a new theme and this year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with Guinness World Records to create a "Record Breakers" themed Challenge.

Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover the weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic, People Power and Action! Adventure!

As part of this year's Challenge, children, parents, carers and other family members will be asked to make a pledge to help set a new Guinness World Records™ title for the Most Pledges Received for a Reading Campaign - a minimum of 100,000 pledges are needed to set the record!

Alderley Edge Library will be holding their pledging session on Saturday 11th July from 9.30am until 1pm.

Janet Haley, Senior Library Assistant, said "We're hoping that the children will take up the challenge and come along and make their pledge at their local library. Last year 36 children completed the challenge and received a certificate and medal, we're hoping to encourage more children to complete the challenge this year.

"We are also holding a challenge for adults over the summer, called "Something new", so adults can take part alongside their children."

The 2015 Summer Reading Challenge takes place between Saturday 4th July and Saturday 5th September.
