Successful gardens day takes local charity over £1m fundraising target

A regular feature on the summer social calendar now, Wilmslow Wells for Africa ran a very successful Open Gardens Day fundraiser on Saturday, June 27th.

Not only were visitors blessed with wonderful weather as they strolled around the 17 beautiful gardens in Wilmslow, Handforth and Alderley Edge, but the charity is also very pleased to report it has now reached a total of over £1,000,000 raised since Wilmslow Wells for Africa was founded.

Contributing to the health and welfare of struggling communities in Africa, this money is used to provide sources of clean water, with projects bringing relief for many drought-stricken areas all over the continent.

Saturday alone raised nearly £12,000, an amazing amount which could not have been achieved without the contribution of so many garden owners and of course, the charity's own team that works so tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all happen.

Helen Battilana, Chairman of Wilmslow Wells for Africa said "By lunchtime I knew we had made it, so I was able to announce to the visitors taking lunch at St John's Church Rooms that we had passed the £1 million milestone. As I told them, the charity's founder, Brenda Mottershead, had started with a target of £2,250 for the first well. Having achieved that, she said 'We need not stop here' and that is what the current Trustees feel. The need for sources of clean water is still immense and we will carry on fundraising to make a difference."
